After the success of his introductory electronics workshop last year, Timebanker Kacper Ziemianin is back to teach us about circuit bending and hardware hacking. Basically, taking something old and making something new and cool. If you like dismantling old stuff and flexing your creative customisation muscles, then this is the workshop for you!
What to expect
In this workshop you will be introduced to the wonderful world of circuit bending and hardware hacking. We’ll be taking the circuits from discarded low voltage devices (like children’s toys, small digital synthesizers, radios etc) and turning them into something with its very own sound and light show – a synthesizer, a robot maybe? The electronics world is your oyster!
During the workshop, we’ll reflect on the history of circuit bending, before doing a deep dive into what to look for and where, what tools and components you need, and how to stay safe when hardware hacking.
After that, we’ll continue with a quick introduction to soldering and working with multimeters (you might have played around with these at school, they measure electric currents and voltage), before figuring out how to generate sounds from your invention. Armed with all this technological know-how, you’ll leave the workshop equipped to explore circuit bending by yourself.
Important
Please bring your own toy/instrument to tinker with. It should be battery operated (12 volts max), have built in speaker and should make some sounds (the more sounds, the better!). The best examples of this include mini keyboards, electronic toys, radios, personal music players, mini synthesisers, effect units etc.
If in doubt email Kacper with a picture and he will let you know if it’s circuit-bending compatible: kaziem@poczta.fm
